LINING CUSTOM DRAPERY

Should you line the drapery? We’re asked this question often and always answer the same - yes, you should always line your custom drapes. Lined drapes and curtains offer several benefits:

  • Liners protect the fabric of your custom curtains from sun damage and general wear and tear
  • Liners conceal hems and seams to give your custom side panels and drapes a more polished aesthetic
  • Liners increase the insulation of your drapery while also helping to reduce both interior and exterior noise
  • A liner helps the fabric to drape better and gives your home’s custom drapery a more uniform appearance

Choosing a Header for Custom Drapes

Selecting the fabric and liner material may feel overwhelming, but you must choose a header style. Pleats are one of the most popular headers for drapes, and you have several options to choose from:

  • Pleats: Pinch pleats are one of the most common and recognizable drape headers in two and three-finger styles. You can also choose inverted, goblet, or box-style pleats for your custom drapery.
  • Grommet: Grommet headers have clean, simple lines and are an excellent choice for contemporary or transitional decor. Pro tip: coordinate the grommet finish with other metal finishes in the room.
  • Rod pocket: This header features fabric folded over and attached to itself, forming a pocket for the rod to sit in. This basic style is ideal for traditional decor but is only for stationary panels, not the traversing variety.
  • Tab top: As the name implies, a tab top header features fabric tabs through which the rod is inserted. It’s a delightful choice for a farmhouse and shabby-chic interiors. Tab top headers are fine for occasional traversing but perform best for stationary panel use.

Additional Consideration for Custom Drapery

We’ve discussed fabrics, liners, and headers, but there’s still more to know about designing exquisite custom drapes for your home.

  • Some fabrics drape better than others. You can check how well a material will drape by pinching a piece of test fabric in an accordion-like pleat; if the fabric flares rather than falling straight, it’s not the best choice for drapery.
  • Consider avoiding bold, bright colors in a room that receives abundant sunlight. Even lined drapes and curtains will fade with time, and discoloration is much more noticeable in dark colors.
  • Hang your custom drapes high and wide to give a room a more spacious look and ensure your drapery will have its famous luxurious fullness when pulled back. Window treatments hung just above the frame will make a room look cut off and shorter than it is. Instead, install drapes just below the ceiling for the most elegant appearance. You should also ensure your curtains are 2.5 times as full as the width of the window to avoid stack back blocking your view when your curtains are drawn open.

Final Thoughts: Are Custom Drapes Different Than Custom Curtains?

We’re glad you asked! Both types of window treatments are made using fabric and are meant to provide exceptional light control and privacy. Officially, the differences are in length and material. Drapery panels are longer and usually made using heavier fabric for a luxe, sophisticated aesthetic, while curtains are shorter and more casual. However, these are not hard and fast rules, and your curtains or drapes can be made using any material you love.
