Types of Lighting
Lighting is different across the board. There are three types of light, each with a place and purpose in your home.
- Ambient: The general light source in a room. Ambient lighting usually comes from overhead fixtures, chandeliers, or wall sconces.
- Task: Lighting that is meant to assist you in performing specific activities. Desk lamps and under-cabinet lighting are examples of adequate task lighting.
- Accent: Accent lighting adds to the ambiance of a room by drawing attention to artwork or architectural features, like built-ins. You can use track lighting, spotlights, or picture lights for this type of lighting.
Warm, Cool & Neutral Lighting
Just as paint colors have warm and cool undertones, lighting has various temperatures that you should consider when designing a space.
- Warm lights cast a yellow glow, making the room feel cozy and inviting. It looks best in areas of your home that are for relaxing, such as living rooms and bedrooms.
- Neutral light is white and slightly brighter. It’s an excellent choice for areas that require focus, like kitchens and bathrooms.
- Cool light is blueish and similar to the natural light at noon on a sunny day. It’s energizing and the perfect light for reading and hobbies with fine detail.
Best Practices for Lighting
- Layer your lighting: Using several sources of light adds dimension to a room and keeps it from having areas with dark shadows. A combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting is always a good route.
- Install dimmers wherever possible to make your lighting more versatile.
- Choose large fixtures first: It’s easier to find accent and task lighting that complements more prominent ambient fixtures than vice versa.
- Use existing wall and furniture colors to help create the atmosphere you want. Remember that light colors and reflective surfaces make rooms appear larger, so consider using mirrors and metallic finishes in small areas. Choose darker hues and warm-temperature lighting to make a hollow space more intimate.
